'cos tonight...is the night..

So, how much does your browser actually knows about you? And how much important information do you actually provide in order to have a browser that understands your needs and wants? With the help of conditions, we are now able to "bond" with our browsers.

Which means, we can now have browsers that know what we like and recommend stuffs that would basically satisfy our conditions/requirements.

Basically, here's how it works, if you're using firefox or flock, you can download the add on called stumbleupon, digg it, etc etc. I am currently using Stumble upon, and what it is capable of is really out of the world.

Basically what you need to do is, when you are visiting a website, you have the option of either selecting "I like it" or "I don't". What Stumbleupon does is it actually looks for tags or the theme of the site. Say when you have already selected the two options for 100 websites, it matches the attributes of the websites you like and eliminates those you don't. When you hit the Stumbleupon! button, it directs you to a website that best suits you. Well, obviously, the more times you vote, the more stumbleupon understands you.

Trust me if you're a surfer, you're gonna need this.

If you happen to work in a company that blocks most email sites, network sites, stream sites, claiming that the bandwith should be used for other purposes, this is what you can do. There are many external proxy sites you can use to bypass the blocked site. Basically what it does is, it masks the website's domain with something else and appear as a different domain name, therefore you will be able to visit the site.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual has the function of perpetual calendar. Perpetual calendar basically means that it is able to tell that date without going wrong. The normal 3 o'clock date on your watch are dummy calendars meaning every month will have 31 days. Let's say we're in April and April only have 30 days you will have to adjust the date so that it doesn't strike 31.

Basically, the perpetual calendar works with a formula:

Calculating the day of the week given the date.

The formula uses the fact that each year begins one day later than the previous except for leap years. The days in a leap year are 2 days later except for January and February where it is one day later. Since the year values increase by one we can create a sequence by adding the year to the year divided by 4 dropping the fraction. This sequence increases by 1 every year except every 4 years where it increases by 2. This sequence will work for the years 1901 through 2099 only since 1900 and 2100 are not leap years.

A table is needed to get the relative day of week of the first of each month relative to the first day of a year.

Now for the formula (example for 2006/3/15 ).

Add the following: The 4 digit year (2006). The integer portion of the year divided by 4 (501). The relative month code (3). The day of the month (15). If it is a leap year and January or February then subtract 1 (0). Adjust the relative week day by subtracting 2 (2525-2). Divide by 7 keeping the remainder (3).

Use this number to find the day as follows:
0-Sunday 1-Monday 2-Tuesday 3-Wednesday 4-Thursday 5-Friday 6-Saturday

Corresponding months

"Corresponding months" are those months within the calendar year that start on the same day. For example, September and December correspond, because September 1 falls on the same day as December 1. Months can only correspond if the number of days between their first days is divisible by 7, or in other words, if their first days are a whole number of weeks apart. For example, February corresponds to March because February has 28 days, a number divisible by 7, 28 days being exactly four weeks. In a leap year, January and February correspond to different months than in a common year since February 29 means each subsequent month starts a day later.

Here's how the months correspond:

  • Common year
    • January and October.
    • February, March and November.
    • April and July.
    • No month corresponds to August.
  • Leap year
    • January, April and July.
    • February and August.
    • March and November.
    • No month corresponds to October.
  • All years
    • September and December.
    • No month corresponds to May or June.

Note that in the months table below, corresponding months have the same number, a fact which follows directly from the definition.

Corresponding years

There are 7 possible days that a year can start on, and leap years will alter the day of the week after Feb 29. This means that there are 14 configurations that a year can have. For example, 2007 is a common year starting on monday, meaning that 2007 corresponds to the 2001 calendar year. 2008, on the other hand, will be a leap year starting on tuesday, meaning that the year starts off corresponding to 2002, but after February, corresponds to 2003.

Mental calculation

An easy way to do the calculation in your head is to imagine the year starts on March 1 rather than Jan 1 (as it did in Roman times), so that the extra day in a leap year is the last day, rather than occurring in the middle of the year. This removes the need to do different calculations for a leap year. It leads to, "day 0" described above being the last day of February.

April 4, June 6, Aug 8, Oct 10 and Dec 12, all occur on the same day as day 0 (note that April is the 4th month, June the 6th, August the 8th, etc).

May 9 & Sep 5 are also the same day as day 0 (May is the 5th month and September the 9th — the 9th day of the 5th month and the 5th day of the 9th month).


July 11 and Nov 7 are the same day as day 0 (the 7th and 11th months, respectively -- think of the 7-11 shops).

However, if one regards the new year as beginning onMarch 1 one has a simpler situation for February and January. Day 0 occurs on Jan 16 and Feb 6, which are the same day of the week as the previous last day of February (i.e. last year's Doomsday) for every year.

Also within each year beginning March 1, five months is always exactly 153 days and hence one day short of a whole number of weeks. This gives rise to the following dates for day 0:

Month       +5 months    -5 months   +10 Months April 4     September 5              February 6 June 6      November 7  August 8    January 9     March 7 October 10                May 9 December 12               July 11

So if you can figure out what day "day 0" is, you can quickly find a date in any month that falls on the same day, and you only have to add or subtract a few days to get to any other day in the month.

Finding day 0 for a given year

First memorise this: in 2000, day 0 was a Tuesday. Every century, day 0 changes according to the following pattern: Tuesday, Sunday, Friday, Wednesday every 400 years; i.e., in 2100 day 0 will be Sunday; in 1900 it was Wednesday.

Every common year, day 0 moves forward one day, and two days every leap year.

The following also apply within any century beginning with a year ending with 00:

  • Every four years, day 0 moves two days earlier. Thus, February 29, 2004 is a Sunday; February 29, 2008 is a Friday; February 29, 2012 is a Wednesday, etc.
  • Every twelve years, day 0 moves one day later. Thus February 29, 2012 is a Wednesday, February 29, 2024 is a Thursday etc.
  • Every twenty-eight years the calendar returns to the same day Thus, February 29, 1972, 2000, 2028, 2056, 2084 are all Tuesdays.

Example

So let's say it is desired to know what day June 3 2017 will be. Day 0 for 2000 was a Tuesday, in 2012 it will be Wednesday, 2013 will be Thursday, 2014 Friday, 2015 Saturday, 2016 (a leap year) Monday, and 2017 Tuesday; June is the 6th month, so the 6 June is a Tuesday. Three days earlier is Saturday.

I hope this gives you a basic understanding of how the perpetual calendar works. Well obviously it would be a rather complicated issue when we're talking about the this complication as there will be a myriad of gears to enable this to work. Just to give you an idea :)

Last week, I was notified that my company laptop will be replaced due to its old age. The lap top I got was an old one and was actually a used set. The new batch of lap tops just came in last week, so I was in the front line of receiving them. We used to get our lap tops from Toshiba (distributed by Teledynamics - refer to one of my 2007 posts, I went there for an interview before). We have stopped getting our supply from them and we're now getting our machines from HP. Apparently, HP is the standard for our company globally, and we're receiving our first HP batch this round.

All I can say is, its not bad at all.. My old lap top was so afraid of the new one it actually shiver and shut itself down automatically when placed side by side to avoid any embarassment (www.chucknorrisfacts.com)

Anyway here are a few things you could do to your powerful laptop (if you have one. Haw! Haw!)

1.Install FlyaKite OSX

What is it? It is actually a OS interface that is incorporated into Windows, thus changing every single detail of windows to a Mac OS. Due to the fact that it actually modifies instead of being an add on, it doesn't really lag the pc. That's the advantage.

2. Install Flock internet browser.

Basically Flock is created using the firefox engine. What it does is it enhances the usefulness of firefox with better user friendliness and functionality. As opposed to Nicholas Cheong Eu Jin's opinion of "driving a heavily modified proton that's trying to look like an Evo", I have a diferent metaphor to describe flock. "A Mercedez Benz that is beautifully enhanced by AMG".

Basically, flock works very well with RSS feed, which is also what Firefox is capable of, but Flock has additional side and top bars that utilizes the RSS feed. For example, we have the people bar where there are a few network sites you can log on to, say for instance, facebook. You no longer have to open a new tab to check out facebook. All you need to do is to log in to ur facebook at the side bar and you will have a summary of recent updates on your profile and also your friends' updates.

The second thing is, the home page is called My world, where you place your favourites on one side, while you have a choice of placing or adding widgets (friend activities, Recent feeds, Media, etc) For me, I have a few blogs that I frequent to, so I add blog to the feed and everytime the blogger updates the blog, I'll be notified. Works well for the star RSS as well.

The third thing is the Media bar, where you can have a selection of a few media sites or network sites. In this bar you will be able to see either pictures or videos. For me, it is set to facebook, so everytime any friends adds a new picture I'll be able to see it in the bar.

Also, not to mention the numerous extensions you can add into your flock, such as the flashblock, stumble upon, del.i.cious.. etc etc.

Just Think About It

Back then when we only had the telephone, if we want to call someone and talk. The advantage was we were able to have instant communication as opposed to writing letters.

Soon after came online chatting. The advantage was its cheaper, and you could chat with more than one person at a time. Now you save alot of money.

We used to write letters to our friends or family but it would take at least 2 working days for it to reach to our friends who are living in another state.

Soon after the email was invented. We were able to send letters ANYWHERE in a minute.

If we wanted to have friends outstation, we look at the pen pal section in the newspaper or magazine. We'll have tons of people posting themselves up in the newspaper hoping to find a friend or two.

Not too long later came the likes of Friendster, Facebook and Myspace. We're able to post our details online, search for friends instantly, and there is literally no geographical boundaries.

Things like pen pal was just a 2 page section off a newspaper, but the creaters of facebook and myspace are among the richest people in the world. Pen pals sections in Newspaper magazines are almost extinct now.

Back then, there used to be daily updates of job recruitments in the newspaper. Now the most parts of updates are during the weekends. Jobstreet, JobsDB, etc, are gaining popularity, due to the easy access of info for both job seekers and job providers.

Look at how these small things has changed our lives. Give a think about it, there is still a myriad of opportunities to be capitalized by us. If you know what I mean. This world has lost its story..

Google's a sexist and so am I


Not too long ago, about a year or so, this couple was arguing about great inventions are made by men, and not women. The girlfriend insisted that women did create something great and decided to google it. She typed "she invented" only to have google suggesting that it was an error.

What a great story. Guys rule over girls. Forever. Hahaha. Don't worry girls, Google has made some changes, which I believe it wasn't a glitch but Google just wanted to shut the women's mouth by making if "fair". Ha Ha Ha.

The deal is this with the long gone RHC:

Following our last performance...and really, right after we played back in 05-06 i really felt that God was calling me out of music. I felt a need to get a steady job and go in a career direction so that I could settle down and move on with my life. It was very interesting, something that I had been SO passionate about for YEARS was all of a sudden gone, normally a good sign when a persons calling has been directed elsewhere. After lots and lots of prayer I made the decision to leave the music scene. I know Nic (vocals) really felt like he needed to head back to school and finish up their studies. Styne (Guitars) moved on and formed his own christian band with Nic helping out once in awhile. Matt (drums), Ken (bass) And I (lead Guitar) are moving on our life with a stable job.

The bottom line, so to speak, was that the majority of us were around the 23s ++ year old range. that may sound young, but in the game of music...if yo're not between 18-22...then you had better be making a for-real living, which we were not. we may have enough to pay minimal bills, but after that..it was just enough to keep us surviving. music is a young mans game.

In the end though we all still love music, punk and metal in particular, and our lives are going well.

It has been a great journey.
